Animal management systems at USask are complex and work to meet the unique needs of researchers across campus. The Animal Management System (AMS) project will combine and simplify existing systems and introduce new technology designed with researcher’s needs in mind. These improvements aim to enhance the experience for researchers, in addition to increasing efficiency and reduce costs.  Through this work, the AMS project will support research excellence, strengthen the quality of data, improve regulatory accountability and maintain USask’s commitment to responsible animal care.

As part of the Research Information Management (RIMS) Program, USask will be implementing a new and modern animal management system to support activities related to the physical management of animals for research, teaching, and learning purposes

The AMS project focuses on animals used in USask teaching and research.

The technology: Tick@lab

USask has selected Tick@Lab by a-tune, an integrated software solution that is designed to support how we manage and care for animals across campus. This single system supports animal oversight, procurement, animal use protocol and operations management, animal care, and research support, including vivarium operations.  Tick@Lab is widely used by research-intensive institutions and was chosen for its flexibility, functionality, and ability to support Canadian animal care and oversight requirements.

Once fully implemented, the new system will ensure USask’s regulatory compliance and further solidify USask’s commitment to best practices in animal welfare by improving data quality and operational efficiency, service delivery to researchers, as well as faculty in animal care and use, and by supporting scalable growth and future readiness.
